Growing Venus Flytrap in the Philippines: a Newbie

Hi! You're here probably because like me, you've decided to try venturing in to this new adventure of growing carnivorous plants.

So I decided to try my luck growing a Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula). Here you can find update from time to time regarding my progress. So enjoy!

Im from the Philippines and I ordered my plant from Mr. Volker (website: http://pitcher-plants.com). He's the only trusted seller I know (although Im sure there are other sources).

Here's how it looks when I received it today..

This is the D. muscipula Clone #2 and it costs 300php. This comes with a free Nepenthes Miranda seed too! (thanks Mr. Volker). The plant was shipped bare-root so you have to prepare all the necessary things before the plant arrives.

First of all, Im just a newbie and everything here is based on what I have read on the net.

Here's what I used:
  • POTS - plastic pot from ACE Hardware. About 4 inches in height and probably around 6-7 inches in diameter.
  • MEDIA (soil) - pure coco peat from ACE Hardware. (Mr. Volker said he's using pure coco peat on his VFT as well). As others advised, I have washed and rinsed the coco peat from rain water multiple times (probably 7 times or more). This is to remove any salt or other residue on the coco peat. Then I soak it again in rain water for a few hours.
  • WATER - rain water or distilled water.

When the plant arrives, I soaked it on the rain water for about 30 minutes like this:

Then I repotted it like this.

I put a saucer pan with a few rain water underneath. And there it is. I will be observing the plant for 2-3 weeks, so watch out for updates! Ciao!
